Details

This two-day seminar included presentations by leading professionals in the rotomolding industry. Technical question and answer sessions helped provide specific advice. Hands-on demonstrations by some of the speakers verified information covered in the presentations. Gala presented information on MicroPellet technology and produced material on the extrusion line.

Update July 2015 - This article appeared in RotoWorld, Vol. XI, Issue 3, 2015, reporting on Gala’s Rotomolding Symposium 2015.  Rotational molding is a major application for micropellets.  RotoWorld is published by JSJ Productions in Austin, TX, with subscription circulation targeting the entire global rotational molding industry. This article was written by Matthew Tornow.

“Developing a winning product product” - Follow a product idea through market research design, development, tool-making, prototyping, testing, and production to a prize winning, profitable product. A case study on how bringing together the right team of companies can achieve the desired outcome.

"Tips and tricks for efficient product finishing" - A look at various techniques from design to tool-making, to how having the correct tool for the job can help streamline finishing and improve product consistency and quality. An insight to some lessons learnt in 30 years of practical Rotational Molding.

“MIG®5 Mold In Graphics®” - Mold In Graphic Systems® will demonstrate how the new MIG®5 Mold In Graphics® perform with MicroPellets produced using Gala Industries state of the art processing equipment. The MIG®5 Graphic can be applied on any texture or mold temperature commonly found in the rotomolding industry. The MIG®5 Graphic allows molders using MicroPellets to permanently decorate and enhance the appearance of their products in lieu of hot stamp foils, stickers, engravings or any other type of decorating method currently being used.  Mold In Graphic Systems® will review products such as their Rotational Molding Compound (RMC³®), Color In Systems®, Color On Systems® and other Enhancement products that can be utilized when molding using MicroPellets.

Sandy Scaccia

“Problems and Solutions” - Sandy will address some common and everyday problems that rotomolders face and, from a mold maker’s perspective and offer suggestions on what can be done to alleviate or even eliminate them. In many cases common problems can be fixed quite simply by utilizing of currently available products, simple maintenance procedures, or by changing the way in which molds operate in their environment. Questions are welcome, Sandy will be happy to discuss potential solutions for problem issues.

Michel Truax

"Techno-plates" - Michel will discuss an add-on system for improved productivity when rotomolding with large and heavy molds. Running large and heavy molds on most machines can be a challenge, especially when using a "C" or closed arm. Access to the top of the mold is limited and difficult. STP Rotomachinery, Inc. has developed an add-on system that significantly improves the productivity of any company that molds very large parts.

Marcelo Mazzaro Costa

Speaker Bio

Marcelo Mazzaro Costa, the Managing Director at Nordeste indústria e Comercio, will introduce FORTLEV Group, one of the largest molders in Brazil. FORTLEV Group’s main product is water tanks. Marcelo will describe how they introduced MicroPellets , show some analysis compared with powder, and discuss thickness distribution, impact test, bubbles, and cycle time.

Dr. Gareth McDowell

Speaker Bio

493K’s Dr. Gareth McDowell will present a new concept in rotational molding machines to the Gala congress. It is designed to give rotomolders knowledge of what is happening inside their mold and to give them full control over every aspect of the manufacture. Gareth will explain how the new machine provides molders with services that have only previously been available to R&D laboratory machines or as add-ons to production machines. Gareth will also demonstrate the newly developed thickness checker against a part molded during the symposium.

"Multi Layer Molding – who gives a shot?" Today’s demands on the molder just keep growing, so what’s involved and how can MicroPellets come to the aid of the molder? The range of materials is growing fast, no longer restricted by a grinding process. As material options increase and become more exotic, so do the potential multi layer options.

Multi Layer molding is a tried and tested process used in a fair number of molding plants. The difference here is in using MicroPellets. Jon will demonstrate, with the use of a dropbox, a 3 layer PE-PE foam-PE molding. A key point here is to see how quickly the second and third layers spread out and lay down to give uniform, even and reproducible results. Use of the drop box can enable the molding of  different compatable layers. Foaming (as demonstrated) can provide properties of rigidity and buoyancy, but other benefits include barrier layer addition, and surface finish options.

"The Magic of MicroPellets" - Matthew’s presentation will outline the difference of using MicroPellets as compared to powder. It will also include explanations as to why we commonly see a reduction in cycle times and also outline why the process becomes more consistent.

"Materials MicroPelletized" - Have you ever wanted to mold PLA? PC? PA? or other materials? We will discuss why making these materials into MicroPellets could open a new world of material options for molders. We will also mold 1 or 2 of these materials as well.
